Credit Mailer vs Referral Mailer: Two Ways to Reach Your Members

Every viral mailer platform worth using gives members two distinct ways to send email into the network. They look similar on the surface — both are "sending a message to members" — but they work on completely different mechanics, and understanding the difference is the first thing any new member should learn.

Credit mailer = network-wide random reach (spend credits)

The credit mailer is the classic safelist mechanic: you spend credits, and your message goes out to a random slice of the entire member network — not just people you know or referred. This is how you reach people you've never interacted with. It's the broadest possible reach the platform offers, and it's priced accordingly: every send costs credits, and how many you have determines how far your message travels.

Referral mailer = your direct referrals only

The referral mailer works differently. It sends exclusively to people you personally referred into the platform — no one else. Because you're not reaching into the shared network pool, referral mailer sends typically don't draw down your credit balance the same way credit-mailer sends do. It's a direct line to the people already connected to you, without competing for the shared network resource.

When members should use each

  • Use the credit mailer when you want maximum exposure to the broader network — new offer launches, general promotions, anything meant for cold-but-opted-in eyes.
  • Use the referral mailer for people already in your downline or referral chain — updates, encouragement to stay active, or offers specifically relevant to people you brought in personally.

Most active members run both in parallel: referral mailer to nurture the team they built, credit mailer to keep growing reach beyond it.

Separate history logs

Because the two mechanics serve different purposes, a well-built platform keeps their history entirely separate. You get one log of everything sent through the credit mailer and a distinct log of everything sent through the referral mailer — so you can review performance for each channel without one muddying the other.
